Here are a few steps that can help individuals increase their EQ. -Spending time reflecting on their own emotions, positive and negative. When people are mindful of how they are feeling as well as their reactions and stress levels, they are better able to recognize, identify, and eventually control their emotions. Sometimes writing down observations can help for future contemplation. -Asking for the opinions of those closest to them. Thinking through a response and its potential consequences can dramatically change the outcome of difficult situations. -Learning from criticism. During encounters with difficult people, it is often helpful to examine what the other party’s situation might be like. Doing so may increase empathy, care, and compassion. -Practicing. People can grow their understanding of their own emotions and the emotions of others. But, in order for that to happen, they must practice emotional intelligence until it becomes second nature.
